Horizon Europe is the European Union (EU) funding programme for the period 2021 – 2027, which targets the sectors of research and innovation. The programme’s budget is around € 95.5 billion, of which € 5.4 billion is from NextGenerationEU to stimulate recovery and strengthen the EU’s resilience in the future, and € 4.5 billion is additional aid.

The EIC Pathfinder Open is under the Innovation Council’s program and supports the development of the first phase of such future technologies (eg various activities at low Readiness Levels 1-4), based on pioneering science research on high-risk technology / high profit (including “deep-tech”).
Detailed Call Description
EIC Pathfinder Open may support the applicant’s work, especially if it is highly risky: it may set out to try things that will not work; it may be faced with questions that nobody knows the answer to yet; it may realise that there are many aspects of the problem that you do not master. On the contrary, if the path the applicant want to follow is incremental by nature or known, EIC Pathfinder Open will not support it.
Before applying you should verify that your proposal meets all the following essential characteristics (‘Gatekeepers’):
- Convincing long-term vision of a radically new technology that has the potential to have a transformative positive effect to our economy and society.
- Concrete, novel and ambitious science-towards-technology breakthrough, providing advancement towards the envisioned technology.
- High-risk/high-gain research approach and methodology, with concrete and plausible objectives.
