Summary

This open accelerator call is for funding and supporting citizen science initiatives addressing the IMPETUS challenge.

Detailed Call Description

For this third and final IMPETUS Accelerator, is looking to support new and ongoing projects which focus on either of the following challenges:

Citizen Science to Support Circular Communities”. Specifically, projects that address one or more of the following topics, which are related to SDGs #7, #11, #12, and #3:

  • Resource Management: Promote sustainable lifestyles, resource reuse, and pollution prevention.
  • Infrastructure & Housing: Enhance the sustainability and resilience of housing, energy, and public transport.
  • Disaster Resilience: Foster community-driven preparedness, prevention, and adaptation to climate-related disasters.

 “Citizen Science for a Fair and Just Society”. Specifically, projects that address one or more of the following topics, which are related to SDGs #4, #5, #10, and #16:

  • Democracy and Peace: Citizen science can rebuild trust in democracy, promote social cohesion, and support peace by bridging divides in European communities.
  • Inclusion: Citizen science empowers disadvantaged communities, such as rural, elderly, and low-income groups, by amplifying their voices and driving change.
  • Public Trust, Education and Empowerment: Citizen science fosters trust and understanding by involving communities in research and creating accessible, engaging content through collaborations, countering misinformation and declining trust in institutions.

Successful applicants will be expected to design, implement and present the findings from a related citizen science projects over the course of seven months, and actively engage in the IMPETUS Accelerator, including mentoring, networking, and training sessions.

Submission for the IMPETUS Citizen Science Challenge 2024 will be online via the EasyChair platform. Applications will consist of a short proposal presenting the idea, implementation, resources and impact, as well as administrative information and a declaration of honour.

Applications which engage citizens in scientific activities producing new results, which are of mutual benefit to citizen scientists and project administrators alike will be prioritised.

Call Total Budget

€800.000

Financing percentage by EU or other bodies / Level of Subsidy or Loan

The two types of call grants are:

  • Funding for kickstarting projects €20.000: Projects that are no more than six months into their citizen science journey and are yet to establish a community and/or data collection and processing procedures can  apply. It is expected that 36 projects will be funded under this call.
  • Funding for sustaining projects €10.000: Projects that are more advanced, with established processes, an engaged community, and initial evidence of impact, can apply. It is expected these grants to be awarded for the continuation, enhancing of impact, and/or further establishment of existing projects. It is expected that 10 projects will be funded under this call.

The expected duration of participation will last 7 months. IMPETUS will provide funding for a seven-month project, which must be implemented during the IMPETUS acceleration program, scheduled to take place between June 2025 and January 2026.

Eligibility For Participation Notes

For the IMPETUS call, in order to be eligible, the applicants can be: individuals, legal entities and consortia established in a country or territory in the European Research Area. This includes the European Union, all overseas countries and territories linked to EU member states and all third countries associated to or currently negotiating an association agreement with Horizon Europe (see also Eligible Countries IMPETUS Open Call 2025).

Every entity is allowed to participate in one application, either on its own or as part of a consortium.

IMPETUS has the following conflict of interest policy: Immediate family, partners, and members of staff of IMPETUS consortium members (including subcontractors), are prohibited to apply.
