Horizon Europe is the European Union (EU) funding programme for the period 2021 – 2027, which targets the sectors of research and innovation. The programme’s budget is around € 95.5 billion, of which € 5.4 billion is from NextGenerationEU to stimulate recovery and strengthen the EU’s resilience in the future, and € 4.5 billion is additional aid.
There is a need to enable major advances in the life sciences and biotechnology, in new genomic techniques, such as gene/genome editing. This aims to ensure they can contribute safely and sustainably addressing the grand societal challenges of our age, such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, improved resource efficiency by industry and throughout various sectors of the economy. This covers their applicability for bio-based sectors. These advances must be aligned with the relevant EU legal framework, while aiming to support the climate ambition of zero net emissions by 2050, as well as biodiversity protection and resource efficiency goals.
