Novel thermal energy storage for CSP

Summary

Project results are expected to contribute to all of the following expected outcomes:

  • Improved dispatchability of concentrated solar power (CSP) plants.
  • Improved role of CSP plants in the energy system.
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Achievement of the CSP targets of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan.

Detailed Call Description

Support will be given to novel thermal energy storage solutions for CSP plants. The thermal energy storage solutions proposed will have to be more efficient, cost effective and reliable than current commercial solutions and achieve similar performance in terms of cycles.

Projects should consider the possible impact on human health and assess the sustainability of the proposed solutions in environmental and socio-economic terms, taking into consideration the global value chains.

The applicants should convincingly present that the storage solution that is developed has the potential to be applied at commercial level. Applicants are encouraged to consider a ‘circularity by design’ approach.
